About the Artist

My name is John Pictou, I am a 43 year old mask carver and craftsman of Mi'gmaq and Iroquois decent.
My grandfather was Iroquois and I remember watching him carve figures out of wood.  I have chosen
to carve figures out of wood.  I have chosen to carve these masks because they are part of my
heritage and I love the raw character that comes out of them.

About the Mask

The men of the Iroguois Society of False Faces carve wooden masks that represent supernatural beings
that they believe to be evil spirits.  Members of the Society wear these masks in ceremonies concerned
with curing diseases.  The masks represent mythical, bodiless beings that live in the forest, terrifying
beings that were often seen by Woodland Indians.
